PLACENCIA
Once a quiet fishing village, Placencia has become an increasingly popular eco-destination in the Caribbean. For those who enjoy outdoor adventure, the Stann Creek region offers a myriad of activities: hiking through mountainous rainforests, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and exploring Mayan ruins. The peninsula has 16 miles of quiet beaches, with a lagoon to the west and the Caribbean to the east and plenty of peace and quiet in between. Tour guides and dive centers offer a variety of excursions, including boat tours to the outer cays. Also popular are guided land tours to Mayan ruins or hiking the jungle trails of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, where the world's first jaguar reserve was established.
