XUNANTUNICH MAYA RUINS
WHAT TO EXPECT!
Discover the fascinating history of Xunantunich, the ancient Mayan city that once was inhabited by more than 10 thousand people. We’ll cross with a ferry the Mopán River and we’ll begin our tour. You’ll love to see how the place is today the house of iguanas and bats that live on the riverbank.
The place was strategically built on the top of a valley to be able to have visibility of the entire territory. Once we reach the place, you’ll enjoy the view of the City of San Ignacio. The tour will last two hours in which you’ll explore the archaeological place, learn more about the life of the inhabitants and their ceremonial practices. We’ll visit the ruins, the complexes and you’ll understand the social structure of the Mayans, with their residential palaces, the civic center, the ball court organized in a series of squares.
You can’t miss the Castillo Temple with a height of 40 meters in the Plaza Central, this is one of the highest temples in Belize and from there you can admire a 360 degree view of the Belize River valley and the next Guatemala. In the Park you can also see howler monkeys and several species of birds.
After the tour we’ll have our typical Belizean Lunch at a local restaurant before leaving you at your hotel in San Ignacio.
